A Spring Wedding in the Devon countryside for Jo & James

We always say Upton Barn & Walled Garden is a wedding venue for all seasons – it looks just as magical in the winter months as it does throughout the warm, hazy days in the summertime. But Jo and James were spoilt with the perfect sunny day in spring earlier this year, where the air felt fresh and the trees were filled with blossom. It brings us so much joy to be able to share their love story on the journal with you today, so keep scrolling for plenty of spring wedding inspiration and of course, an insight into their wedding experience…

“Where do we even begin?! A beautiful celebration of love from start to finish filled with joy, warmth and unforgettable moments we will treasure forever,” reminisces Jo. After 15 months of planning, the couple’s dream day unfolded with laughter, warmth and lots of dancing a day that Jo says, “we will speak about for years to come and wish we could do all over again.”

The couple fell in love with Upton Barn almost immediately, and with our wonderful Georgia as their wedding coordinator, ‘I remember the tour so vividly. When we left the Paddock towards the end of the tour, I started to get emotional (I actually cried) and said this is it.’ Jo and James felt completely supported throughout the planning process. “The team were fab and Georgia especially – so organised and a pleasure to work with.”

Jo and James opted for a timeless black-tie theme for their spring wedding, softened with elegant cream and green hues throughout their décor – the perfect nod to the season. Jo looked stunning in the ‘Hunter’ gown by Made with Love from Kiva and Zen Bridal. “It was everything I could have wished for and more, the incredible material and design made me feel so confident in myself.” She paired her gown with rainbow block heels, delicate pearls and a bespoke sparkly jacket crafted from Margot material, while the groom looked sharp in a Suit Supply tuxedo. For hair and make-up, Jessica Faye Bridal Hair and Kate Devon MUA created glowing, timeless styles. “The make-up brief was soft bridal glam and it was mission accomplished. I felt so beautiful on the day (and my bridesmaids and mum looked incredible too).”

The bride’s mum and aunt led the floral styling, filling the barns with soft creams and rich green hues. “Given our wedding was in April we really didn’t know what the weather would mean for theflowers, but we were so lucky with the sunshine, and the flowers were just beautiful.” Jo’s bouquet, by Culm Florist, was the perfect finishing touch to her aisle style.

The team at Mulberry Catering served a show-stopping menu, which the couple and their loved ones still rave about to this day. “The best food we (and a lot of our guests) have ever had at a wedding – wow – the flavours were just stunning,” says Jo. “Food is such a talking point at weddings and there’s so much that can go wrong, but our guests could not speak highly enough of the food. Best wedding food ever!” Entertainment kept spirits high all evening with Bravo Singing Waiters, live music from Blue Lion band and plenty of dancing. “The entertainment was fab, our guests are still talking about it now.”

When it comes to advice for future couples Jo and James tell us, “Try not to leave each other’s sides and take time for a breather. I can’t tell you how fast the day flies by and taking time to collect your thoughts and just be together to reflect on the day and take it in is so valuable.”

When asked about their favourite part of their spring wedding at Upton Barn & Walled Garden, Jo simply couldn’t choose. “I loved it all and want to do it all again,” she says. “Honestly, we were so thankful we chose a videographer and photographer for our day as we can really relive it.” Jo describes their day as unforgettable, magical and joyful and most importantly, BEST. DAY. EVER.
