“After our first visit, there was honestly nowhere else we wanted to say ‘I do.’ The place speaks for itself, the stunning style, gorgeous views, and all those little details that just make it feel so special,” the couple shared. “But what really sealed the deal was the team. They were so friendly and clearly knew their stuff. We felt totally confident we’d be in great hands from day one (and how right we were).”
Inspired by spring, Emily and Adam opted for a soft pastel colour palette, with buttery yellow hues woven throughout the day – a nod to the bride’s favourite flowers of yellow roses and a sentimental nod to her parents’ wedding. Their love story in the Devonshire countryside was elegant with a laidback, welcoming atmosphere and plenty of playful details.
When it came to the bride’s aisle style, Emily wore a strapless A-line gown complemented with bolero-style sleeves. She kept her jewellery minimal and classic, allowing her gorgeous wedding gown to do the talking. Emily’s bouquet by Field Good Flowers was the perfect arrangement for their spring love story, with pillow-soft pastels, delicate yellow roses and a hint of baby blue as her ‘Something Blue’ for the day. Meanwhile, Adam and his groomsmen looked smart in classic black tie – along with their groomswoman who rocked a super chic jumpsuit!
The couple wanted the charm and characteristics of Upton Barn to shine through, choosing to keep their décor simple yet stunning. Bud vases were filled with spring posies, pillar candles and lilac taper candles added to the ambiance and lemon touches were incorporated throughout their styling. From lemon plates to limoncello wedding favours (which went down a real treat amongst friends and family), these details added a fun and thoughtful feel to their celebration. We’re still smitten with their retro-style signage too, which tied the theme together perfectly.
There were also lots of heartfelt touches incorporated throughout the day, honouring Emily’s late mum. From wearing her mum’s wedding ring to incorporating her perfume and lipstick into the morning preparations, these quiet but thoughtful gestures made their day even more meaningful.
For their food and drink, guests were spoilt with a scrumptious feast from Mulberry Catering Co. Blood orange Aperol spritz kicked off the drinks reception in true style, followed by canapés, including delicious pea and truffle bruschetta. Their two-course wedding breakfast featured Darts Farm beef, with indulgent sharing dessert boards to tuck into afterwards – which were total crowd-pleasers!
Music was also central to Emily and Adam’s celebration – the couple created playlists for their wedding day incorporating suggestions from their guests in the lead-up to the big day. Their band, All Jazzed up, made sure the dance-floor was full. They even joined guests on the floor during an iconic rendition of “I Wanna Be Like You.” One of the most special moments for Emily and Adam was stepping outside and catching a glimpse of their loved ones dancing the night away inside.
“People were singing, jumping around and just having the best time – it was such a pinch-me moment. We just stood there, totally in the moment, taking it all in,” explains Emily. “It was pure joy seeing all of our favourite people in one place.”
As the sun began to set, Emily and Adam headed outside with their guests to toast marshmallows on the fire pits – a cosy end to an incredible day. Reflecting on the day, the newlyweds have shared this advice:
“Everyone always tells you how quickly the big day goes by and they’re right, it really does fly! But what no one really prepares you for is just how magical the days and weeks after can be. The love doesn’t stop once the last dance ends. There’s something so special about seeing your day through everyone else’s eyes. The candid photos, the messages, the stories being shared. You’re wrapped in this beautiful bubble of love and celebration that lingers long after the wedding. So yes, take a moment during the ceremony to really breathe it all in, look at your guests, hold each other’s hands tightly, and be present but also know the joy doesn’t end there.”
It was an honour to be able to play such a huge part in Emily and Adam’s wedding day and we hope you feel truly inspired by their celebration. And if you’re looking for a barn wedding venue in Devon to host your love story, we’d love to show you everything Upton Barn & Walled Garden has to offer.
