Response from Upton Barn & Walled Garden

We don’t really know where to start…..if you would’ve said to us this time last year that we would be dealing with the situation we currently are we wouldn’t have believed you and even in the midst of it all it is still hard to comprehend.

Upton Barn is a huge part of our life and our family and we have worked tirelessly over the years to build a venue and a team that we are immensely proud of. We feel absolutely privileged to be a part of our couples weddings and welcome them into our Upton Family.

On Monday 23rd March the Government essentially put the country into lockdown. Weddings were categorically put on hold for a minimum of 3 weeks. We have been monitoring the news and guidance around COVID-19 since it all began and in recent weeks the advice has increased in severity with social distancing, only allowing essential travel and requiring staff to work from home and now to complete lockdown. While we whole-heartedly support the Government and we know that there is no other way to defeat this Global Pandemic than by introducing stringent measures to keep the public safe, we are equally devastated for our couples due to get married at Upton Barn over the next few weeks, we know these couples will have put their heart and soul into planning their perfect day.

We understand that Coronavirus is not going to go away unless we all pull together and heed the instructions of our Government and protect our staff, our couples and their families. We want to take the stress and worry away from all couples who have weddings planned at Upton over the next few months and offer them some reassurance and hope, we also want to support our NHS and be a part of the solution. Therefore we have made the very difficult decision in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and consequent government advice to postpone all weddings due to take place between now and 31st July 2020. As things stand, weddings after that date have not yet been postponed but we will need of course to keep any decisions in that regard under close review in line with future government advice.

Working alongside the Devon Registry Office we are arranging a postponement date for all of these couples to ensure that their weddings will still go ahead, albeit not quite on the date they had hoped for. Fortunately we have a wonderful working relationship with our recommended caterers Pickle Shack and Mulberry Catering Co. who are working equally as hard to make arrangements for postponing their bookings.

As I’m sure you will understand this is no mean feat, we are a very small team and this has meant a lot of sleepless nights, much worry and plenty of tears from everyone (couples, suppliers and us!) but anyone who knows us well will know that we will do everything in our power to ensure that our couples get the Wedding Day they dreamt of at Upton.

We please ask at this difficult time that you bear with us as we try and help everyone get a mutually agreeable postponement date. We are so grateful to our wonderful couples that have been so amazingly understanding especially as many of our available dates are mid week and perhaps not at the time of year they would have chosen. We fully intend to deliver your wedding and we understand how stressful and upsetting this must all be for you.

We just want you to know that we are doing everything we can in these extraordinary unprecedented times to balance the viability of our business (our livelihood), the health and safety of everyone, the financial security of our staff who rely on us for employment, and our commitment to our current and future couples to ensure that we are still around to deliver their Weddings.

We know that all of our colleagues across the industry are facing the same challenging situation and we feel for them too, we are privileged to have made many wonderful friendships with the amazing suppliers we work with everyday and we really hope they are able to bounce back from this too.

We want to thank all of our staff who are working night and day at the moment to get the processes and systems in place to manage such a mammoth task. We will celebrate with Prosecco when this is all over!

Thank you all for the positivity and kindness you are showing as we navigate this difficult task of helping couples come to grips with the fact that their wedding date is being postponed, and all the disappointment and frustration that comes with that. It really does take its toll and we are trying our hardest to be positive and think about what is to come in the future when all of this has passed.

We truly hope that the situation improves soon so that it is safe for us to get back to the part of the job that we love the most, delivering your wonderful wedding days. In the meantime we will be keeping up to date with the progress of the pandemic as it continues to develop so that we can inform you should there be any changes to update you on.

In such anxious and difficult times we are sending you all of our love, please stay safe and take care of yourselves and your families. Your continued support means everything to us, we honestly cannot tell you just how much!

All our love

Claire & Richard
